Are nursing stereotypes hurting our health care?

Attracting more men to the profession could improve conditions and save lives

As omicron continues surging through the nation’s hospitals, staff shortages threaten our health. To cope, some hospitals are even allowing caregivers staff to work despite testing positive for COVID.

But while they’re especially acute, nurse shortages have been a constant for decades. Burnout and risk levels surely are the prime culprits, but a major cause of the nursing shortage is effectively excluding half of the population from the talent pool. Only 11.5% of New York State’s nurses are men, right about in line with the national average of 12%.
